Inlays & Onlays: What They Are
Inlays and onlays are custom restorations used to repair teeth that are too damaged for a standard filling but don’t require a full crown. They’re made from durable materials like porcelain, gold, or composite resin and are bonded directly to the tooth for long‑lasting strength.
An inlay fits inside the tooth’s chewing surface, staying within the natural cusp edges. An onlay covers a larger area and can extend over one or more cusps, making it ideal when the tooth needs more support.
Porcelain has become a popular choice because it’s strong and blends naturally with your tooth color, though gold has long been a trusted material as well.
How the Treatment Works
Inlays and onlays are completed over two appointments:
First Visit: The dentist removes any decay or old filling material and prepares the tooth. An impression is taken and sent to a dental lab to create your custom restoration. A temporary sealant protects the tooth until your next visit.
Second Visit: The temporary material is removed, and the dentist checks the fit of the inlay or onlay. Once everything is perfect, it’s bonded to the tooth with a high‑strength resin and polished for a smooth, natural finish.
Why Choose an Inlay or Onlay?
Traditional fillings can weaken a tooth over time. Inlays and onlays, however, are bonded in a way that can actually strengthen the tooth—sometimes by as much as 75%. They’re highly durable, often lasting 10 to 30 years, and are an excellent option when a tooth needs more support than a filling can provide but doesn’t require a full crown.
