Porcelain Inlays & Onlays
Porcelain Inlays & Onlays
Porcelain inlays and onlays are custom‑crafted restorations used to repair teeth that have moderate damage or decay—too extensive for a traditional filling, but not severe enough to require a full crown. These restorations are bonded to the tooth to restore strength, function, and a natural appearance.
What Are Inlays and Onlays?
Inlays fit inside the grooves of the tooth, restoring the chewing surface without covering the tooth’s cusps.
Onlays extend over one or more cusps, providing additional coverage and reinforcement when more of the tooth structure needs support.
Both are made from high‑quality porcelain that mimics the look and translucency of natural enamel, allowing them to blend beautifully with your smile.
When They’re Recommended
Porcelain inlays and onlays are ideal for teeth with:
Moderate decay or fractures
Old or failing fillings
Damage that requires more support than a filling can provide
A need for a durable, long‑lasting restoration without placing a full crown
They offer a conservative approach, preserving more of your natural tooth structure compared to crowns.
How the Procedure Works
The process typically takes two visits. During the first appointment, the damaged portion of the tooth is removed, and an impression is taken. This impression is used to create a precisely fitting porcelain restoration. A temporary filling may be placed while your inlay or onlay is being crafted. At the second visit, the final restoration is bonded securely to the tooth, restoring strength and function.
